Tomorrow I go to the airport and spend the night at the Regal hotel, and Monday I fly home to Seattle. Just like that my entire three month adventure in Hong Kong is over, finished, history. It has been a great three months and I certainly know Hong Kong better now than I did when I arrived. I’ve learned to use public transport; ferries, trains, buses, taxis, and I’ve slowly changed my perception of time, so now a ninety minute trip to Kowloon seems normal, not excessive. My life has been tied to a ferry schedule, another adjustment.
Much of what I have done here involves eating. At least that is what I remember, so many great restaurants, from small noodle shops to fancy four star places. The Tasty Congee and Wonton Noodle Shop in the IFC mall is one of my favorites, and downstairs the Tin Ho Wa has great dim sum, if you don’t mind the line and the crowded shared tables. Some of my favorite places are the Ye Shanghai, Sen Hotpot, and the suckling pig place in Kowloon that has only a Chinese name. One of my favorite meals was with Ed’s family where we picked out seafood from the shops and then the restaurant cooked it for us. Great.
I’ve taken several thousand pictures. Of course I intend to delete most of them and keep only the good ones, but so far I haven’t had the time or energy. Between eating we have gone to see places, and taken pictures along the way. I have lots of street pictures, most of them crooked, out of focus, confusing, but occasionally there is a good one, one that captures some piece of the feel of the place. But even the best picture can’t give you the smell or the sound of the place.
The weather has not been good this month. Most days it is cloudy, humid - ninety plus percent, and warm. When I first arrived there was a spectacular sunset; I haven’t seen another. Everyone tells me that the weather in the fall is much better.
Our trip to Macao was memorable, especially our anniversary dinner. The staff at the Four Seasons Hotel were wonderful.
It’s been an adventure; I wonder what’s next.
